 Well, it's the final week of the term and Christmas is only 2 weeks away. Thank you to all parents, caregivers and extended whanau for all the work you have put in this year to assist with the learning and progress of your child. School finishes for the year at 12pm on Thursday.

Week 9 at a glance...

No Swimming this week. Please return any library books that are at home.

Monday - End of year School Mass 9am, Children meet their 2023 teacher in the afternoon.

Wednesday - Prizegiving for all classes 9am - 11:30 

Thursday - Last day of school for the year. Missioning of our Year 6s. The day ends at 12pm.

Letter to Santa

Mr Macmillan has said that If children would like to write a letter to Santa, he will set up a letterbox in the hall foyer and children can put their letters in there. There is also a letterbox in the student foyer.

School Magazine

We are publishing a school magazine again this year, and this will be available during the last week of this term. At this stage, there are only to be 100 magazines printed. It will be a great memento of 2021. Orders are taken now with the cost for the magazine being $10.00.

What!? It's Week 8 of Term 4 already?!!! 

Week 8 at a glance...

Swimming every day this week. Please return any library books that are at home.

Monday - Big Day In - Mufti, swimming gear, $5 for lunch.

Tuesday - Tryathlon - bring either a bike or scooter to school if you have one. 

Wednesday - Swimming, Principal's Luncheon,  Library.  Kapa haka practice.

Thursday - Swimming, 

Friday - Swimming, Assembly.

Last week was super exciting in school with the highlight for some of our tamariki being the disco and our newest member in class - the Elf on the shelf. We are waiting for there to be an answer to the question of whether it is a boy or a girl. I just hope that he or she has better manners than my previous Elf visitors have had!

In Room 16 we put up our Christmas tree and are busy making decorations to decorate it with a personal touch.  We explored what the time of Advent means and the significance of the wreath and candles as we eagerly anticipate celebrating the birth of Jesus.

Well done to Pascale who was the student who raised the most funds in the colour run! Ka mau te wehi!

 Weekly Notices - Term 4, Week 7

Wow!  It's December this week already and only 3 weeks to go till the end of the school year.  The children have been pushing themselves to "finish the year strong".  We had a wonderful time swimming in the rain last week as well as an introduction to Street Racket which the children all enjoyed.  We have another session of Street Racket this week.

We are encouraging our children to have a go at something different during learning through play.  All three classes have enjoyed working with the House of Science kits over the last two weeks.  We are looking forward to the next kits to work through.

There is no swimming for Kahikatea this week.

Library

Please return all library books this week and have a good search at home for any that have been misplaced.  There will be no more books issued for this year, but we will still visit the library to enjoy time reading there.

Weekly Notices, Term 4, Week 6

Bonjour tout le monde and welcome to week 6. I hope you are all enjoying a relaxing weekend despite all the mixed weather we are getting in late Spring. Only 4 weeks are left until the end of the term and the school year. The last day of the year is Thursday 15th December.

Swimming

This is a reminder that all Year 3 classes are swimming again this week. It is an expectation that all children swim unless they have a note with a legitimate reason, as swimming is a part of our Health and PE programme. Please help your child to remember their togs every day.

Hats

Quite a few children are not coming to school with hats. It is compulsory to wear a hat outside during term 4. We only have a very limited number of spare hats and some children are trying to use a class one every day. This is unfair to those who forget occasionally and actually need to use a spare hat as a one-off thing.

Learning

We will be continuing our learning programme right up to the last day. Please encourage your child to continue trying hard during organised learning until the last day.

Monday 5th December Kakano Big Day In

The Senior / Totara team has their camps this week in Taupo. I hope the weather plays ball and they are able to participate in all the planned activities. Please keep the team in your prayers over the week so that they have a safe and joyful camp.

The group of children who were baptised a week or so ago are being Confirmed and will make their First Holy Communion today. Please keep these children in your prayers also.

Weekly Notices, Term 4, Week 5

Wow, what a crazy weekend of weather we have had. I hope you have all had a wonderful time with whanau and managed to rest ahead of another busy week in Kahikatea!

Our junior Kapa Haka Roopu performed in the Ahurei at JPC on Friday and they were fantastic. They looked extra fabulous in their new kapa haka uniforms and showed passion and pride to be representing St Mary's. A special thanks to Mrs Thompson and Matua Wiki for all the work they have done to get the tamariki ready in time. 

Both the senior and junior Kapa Haka Roopu will perform for the school on Monday afternoon, prior to Room 17's exciting assembly.

No Swimming:

There is no swimming for Kahikatea classes this week. We will resume our swimming in week 6, and 8.

Program highlights:

This week we are exploring science boxes from The House of Science to learn more about the world around us. Ask your tamariki when they return from school, what box they explored that day.

Library Tuesday:

We have library on Tuesday so please return all borrowed books as the library will be closing for borrowing very shortly and a stocktake will be carried out.

Hats:

We have very few spare hats in room 16 so please can all tamariki ensure that they bring their hat every day. Even if it is cloudy or raining.

Welcome to week 4, another week full of exciting happenings. 

Reminders - Tomorrow (Monday 7 Nov) is a Teacher only day

                   - Tuesday- Library for Rooms 15 and 16

                   - Wednesday - Library for Room 17

                   - Friday 11 November is Room 17's turn for Assembly.  Parents are welcome to                                 come and join us.

                   - Friday 11 November - Kapahaka Kahui Ako Ahurei

On Friday we have our Kahui Ako Ahurei. There will be schools from Opotiki, Tauranga, Putaruru and Rotorua performing. We have both a junior and senior group performing.  Juniors are being bused back to school at about 10 am and Seniors at 2 pm. The juniors performed at Assembly on Friday and were outstanding.  We wish them all the best for Friday.

No swimming this week.  Last week Room 15, 16 and 17 children were all involved in the "Make a difference" swimming program.  They all made pleasing progress and enjoyed challenging themselves during the sessions.  Well done to those who brought their togs and swam 5/5 days.  

Pokemon cards

Please do not bring Pokemon cards to school.  They are causing all sorts of problems which teachers do not have time to try and resolve.  The cards need to stay at home.  If found at school, they will need to be confiscated.

Weekly Notices, Term 4, Week 3

Bonjour Whanau. I hope you have had a lovely weekend as we head toward November. It looks like the cold weather might finally be behind us and we look forward to increasingly warm sunny days at school. Please ensure your child has a hat at school every day as they must be wearing it in term 4 when playing outside. We only have a limited supply of spare hats at school. Year 3 teachers have been testing the children in class and we will continue to do so this week. Please encourage your child to do their best during testing so we can see how much progress each child has made.

Swimming!

This week we have swimming with coaches from the Swim School so please remember to bring along swimming attire, and a towel every day this week. Other items that can help make the experience more pleasurable for the tamariki are goggles and a swim cap. Please also make sure that all uniform items are clearly named to avoid potential loss or confusion in the changing rooms. We will be swimming even if the weather is wet. If your child is unable to swim, they will need a note from their caregiver to excuse them from this activity.

Grandparents and Grandfriends Mass

Friday we had our Grandparents' / Grandfriends' Mass and that was a wonderful occasion too. It was great to have Andrew Chinn playing alongside Mrs Tiedt. I heard from a parent that her parents, new to the area, had swapped phone numbers with four other Grandparents and intend to catch up with them for coffee later on. There seemed to be a lot of food for morning tea so it was awesome that parents supported this day. A huge thank you to Mrs Mines and Mrs Dobson for organising the day for us.

Andrew Chinn

Andrew Chinn was awesome and the children just loved his workshops and concert. Andrew was blown away by the children’s singing at Mass. One of the songs he stopped singing so he could just enjoy hearing them sing.

Returning Student

We have a student returning to school on Monday who has had cancer.  He has been away since 2021. His immunity has been compromised due to the treatment he has received and he is particularly susceptible to chickenpox and measles. 

Any cases of chickenpox or measles, in the school community, need to be reported to the school office immediately to ensure his health is not compromised. 

He is looking forward to coming back to school as are his friends.

Weekly Notices, Term 4 - Week 2

Welcome to Week 2! I hope that you have enjoyed this glorious long weekend with your whanau and are ready to jump into another action-packed week of learning and exploring. It is the time of the rosary and the tamariki have loved using the beads that we have in class to support in learning their prayers. Some have asked if they can bring their own Rosary Beads into class. This is absolutely fine with me but only if they have permission from their special people and feel that they can look after them carefully while at school, as I can not oversee that while teaching.

How cool was the colour run on Friday?! Thank you to those families and friends that came to cheer us on and help us on the day!

Colour Fun Run Thank you everyone for your support for our Colour Run. It was an awesome event and lots of fun. There are lots of photos on our Facebook page You are able to go online now and order the prizes.   This needs to be done by October 31st.    Prizes will be delivered to school. https://schoolfundraising.co.nz/

St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Rotorua Interhouse Athletics 9:00 am – 2:30 pm  Tuesday 25th October 2022 International Stadium, Ground 2, Devon Street West, Rotorua Event Overview The Interhouse Athletics is for our middle and senior school students - Years 4, 5 & 6. The Interhouse Athletic Sports will be held at Field 2 by the stadium in Rotorua. Years 4 – 6 students need to be taken to / dropped off at the  International Stadium, ground 2 Devon Street West Rotorua on Tuesday 25th October Students sign in at the stadium gate and then go to their appropriate age group area. Interhouse Athletics will finish at approximately 2:30 pm on Tuesday. Children need to be collected from the International Stadium, ground 2 by 3:00 pm at the latest. Children may come to Interhouse Athletics in their house colours or their school PE gear. Children will need – sunhat, sunblock, warm clothes, lunch & a drink. Should the event need to be cancelled, this information will be put on Educa/App/Facebook by 7:30 am

GRANDPARENTS/GRANDFRIENDS MASS;  Friday, October 28th at 9.00 am (PLEASE NOTE TIME) This Friday we have our Grandparents / Grandfriends Mass, 9am at St Mary's Church, we ask that you find a seat at the church prior to 9 am as children will be sitting with their classes.  We would love to have all our special Grandparents and Grandfriends at school with us on this day.   After Mass, Grandparents are invited back to the classes to share in morning tea with their grandchildren (there will be tea and coffee provided in the hall)  We ask all children to bring a plate to share for morning tea.

WORKING BEE We intend to have a working bee this Saturday, October 29th. There are a number of jobs that need to be done. If you are willing to help, can you please let the office know? The projects include painting, spraying the cobbles, painting wooden  Christmas Trees, building two picnic tables, playground equipment maintenance, replacing a damaged panel on a classroom wall and maintenance work on our unicycles and putting together new unicycles. I’ve been amazed at the support we receive for our working bees and I would really appreciate your support with this one too, please.  Come along and meet other parents and enjoy morning tea and a delicious lunch. Children are welcome also. For catering purposes please let Shanelle know in the office if you can assist, even if it is just for an hour or two.
